Comment ne plus avoir peur en avion

Author: Marie-Claude Dentan — with Michel Polacco and Noël Chevrier. Publisher: Le Livre de Poche. Published: 5 Oct 2005, also available at Fnac. ISBN 978-2-253-01632-8.

Flying seems ordinary today; yet for nearly 20% of passengers, take-off, landing and possible air pockets are a real source of anxiety, unrelated to actual risk. Those fears almost always rest on ignorance or false ideas. Air France has for years offered courses to help “aviophobes” overcome them.

This book takes up the themes of those courses. It includes information on stress and anxiety mechanisms (and how to face them), “scientific” data on aeronautical principles, how a flight unfolds, and answers to the questions people ask most often.

Many tips and testimonials, sketches and diagrams complete this simple, concise guide — to read before flying, at the gate, or even in the cabin… Marie-Claude Dentan runs Air France’s “Apprivoisez l’avion” programme. Michel Polacco is a Radio France journalist and aviator. Noël Chevrier is an Air France captain (source: Livre de Poche).

S'envoler sans s'affoler

The art of having less fear of flying — by the course founder Lucienne Skopek and Rafel Carreras. ISBN 2-88268-002-3. Éditions Secavia, P.O. Box 166, CH-1217 Meyrin, Geneva.

Lucienne Skopek holds qualifications in psychology and nursing and a doctorate in socio-linguistics. She specialised in doctor–patient communication and has written several articles on the subject. Her own fear of flying and the path that freed her led her to create courses in Geneva and Washington, D.C., for people who dread or refuse to fly. She was the first in the world to offer French-language courses on managing fear of flying. She wrote the autobiographical Errances — Une vie en transit, which explains her approach and the importance of this course in her life; it is sold at Librairie Centrale in Ferney-Voltaire.

Rafel Carreras is a physicist with a degree in biological sciences. He led internal science outreach at CERN in Geneva. He took part in many radio and television programmes for adults and children. He overcame fear of flying by taking L. Skopek’s courses.
